In December of 2007, DeBartolo Sports and Entertainment made a huge splash in high school athletics by creating an amateur sports division called DeBartolo Sports University. One of the first programs DeBartolo Sports University will launch this year are the Steve Clarkson Quarterback Academies. |

Edward J. DeBartolo, Jr. is Chairman of DeBartolo Holdings, LLC, a merchant-banking organization whose activities consist of investments in partnership interests, equity securities as well as short and medium-term mezzanine, bridge or senior loans for expansion financing, acquisitions, leveraged or management buyouts and recapitalization of promising North American companies.
Through DeBartolo Development, an affiliate of DeBartolo Holdings, DeBartolo remains active in real estate, an industry where his judgment, management skills and caring personality have earned him the respect of all who have come into contact with him.
A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, DeBartolo joined the Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation, founded by his father - one of the originators of the shopping center and mall concept - in 1971. In his various executive capacities, he was responsible for overseeing one of the nation's largest mall development and management firms.
In 1994, DeBartolo became Chairman of the Board of the DeBartolo Realty Corporation, a public REIT. Two years later, the Corporation merged with Simon Property Group to create the largest public real estate company in North America. From 1996-2001, he pursued real estate developments and other entertainment ventures as Chairman/CEO of DeBartolo Entertainment.
Well known for his ownership of the five-time Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers, which lasted 21 years, DeBartolo established a reputation as a player's owner - one who appreciated the efforts of his team and staff on the field, win or lose. In recognition of being one of the country's top sports executives, Football News honored him as its "NFL Man of the Year" in 1989.
While DeBartolo is known for the real estate and professional careers, more and more people are learning about his passion for charitable and educational causes, including:
- His generous donations of time and money to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, the Heart Fund, Cancer Crusade and United Way. For these efforts, he received the 1982 Salvation Army Citation of Merit - the youngest person to ever win the award.
- For his support of Boy's Town of Italy, which assists homeless and needy children. DeBartolo was named "Man of the Year" in 1985.
- Service as national chairman for the 1985 Victor Awards, sponsored by the Sportsman's Club for the City of Hope, and 1986 national banquet chairman for the City of Hope's "Spirit of Life Award."
- In recognition of his business accomplishments, Notre Dame appointed him to its Advisory Council for the school's College of Business Administration.
- Creator of the DeBartolo Family Foundation, which supports children's/ family's social and educational charities in Youngstown and Tampa.
- In 1990, for their outstanding record of service, the Catholic Youth Organization presented DeBartolo and his wife, Candy, with the agency's "Service to Youth Award."
- Elected to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation's Board of Directors in 1991.
- Honored by the National Italian American Foundation with their Special Achievement Award for Sports/Business.
- Named to the Board of the Tampa Bay American Cancer Society.
- Creator of the "Valley True Hero" program, which honors individuals in Mahoning Valley Ohio who made a difference in the lives of others.
- Initiator of the "Spirit of Humanity Award," which recognizes Tampa Bay area non-profit associations.
